INDIGENOUS COMMUNITIES DFES works with outlying indigenous communities to promote preparedness and provide advice on the stocking of adequate food and fuel ahead of each cyclone season. One of the main threats facing remote indigenous communities during the cyclone season is flooding. Indigenous communities can get isolated for many weeks following a cyclonic event. By ensuring that each community has adequate supplies of food, water and fuel prior to the cyclone season, people in these communities are able to continue with daily lives comfortably until the flood waters subside. DFES conduct aerial inspections of outlying and remote indigenous communities immediately following a cyclonic event to assess any damage that has been sustained and to drop off any additional supplies that may be required. DFES may encourage indigenous communities to relocate to regional centres if they believe that it is too dangerous for people to stay at the community during a cyclone. 31 31
