Where exactly are the Vercors ?
Vercors is an undiscovered gem in the Rhône Alpes nestled between Geneva in the north and Nice in the south . The region is serviced by Grenoble or Lyon airports and the Eurostar / TGV .
Why is this region such a cyclist ’ s paradise ?
The Vercors and surrounding region offers a huge diversity of terrain providing routes for all levels of cyclists from super fit to family friendly . The roads are very quiet with local traffic , superb road surfaces and generally courteous drivers .
The Vercors Massif is truly spectacular , featuring limestone cliffs , vast forests , verdant pastures , deep gorges , rivers , caves and a maze of tunnelled and cliff hanging roads . It covers 6,561 square kilometres , featuring 22 cols and 17,000 kilometres of ascents . The climbs range from 12-21kms with mainly 4-6 % gradients . In contrast , as you move north west towards the rolling hills of the Drome , the landscape changes to rural country roads and magnificent views looking back to the Vercors . The Isere Valley , running alongside the Isere river , provides the flatter routes and is lined with walnut groves , fields of sunflowers , barley and rich agricultural pastures .
Do you have any less challenging rides ?
For those wanting to cycle on rolling hills or flatter roads there are many options which are less demanding but no less , spectacular . The 11th century St . Antoine de L ’ Abbaye is officially one of the prettiest villages in France . After a 57km route along rural country roads and with fabulous views back towards the Vercors , you will arrive at the magnificent medieval village with plenty of time to see it ’ s imposing cathedral , winding maze of streets and local artisan shops .
Does this region cater for Families ?
In the words of one customer , it is a “ good balance of family cycling / day trips ... and some serious cycling on some of the best roads I ’ ve ever cycled on . Virtually car free ( and very few other cyclists ).”
We have many family cycling options . Each of our family routes features stops at such fun places as fresh water pools , waterfalls , wild river swimming areas , a zip wire park and the local 25m outdoor pool . In addition , the Vecors is a great place for young cyclists to gain confidence . The 1.5m law for cars passing cyclists , the courteous drivers and the general lack of traffic takes much of the stress out of riding with little ones . Back at Velo Vercors there is a 4 m splash pool , badminton , swings and a huge garden to play in .
