This article focuses on the negative impact use of cell phones. This author discusses the first time he owned a cell phone and how everyone wanted one. He claims that phone devices have a linkage and contributes to negative social attitudes when communicating. A lot of people are overusing and sometimes abusing their use of mobile phones. It’s to the point where people are not aware of their surroundings and becoming emotionally attached to their phones; to the point where they cannot sleep anymore. When people wake up they usually go straight to their phone and the last thing they touch before they go to sleep. For me I know there have been times when I forget my phone and feel so lost. The author compares this to “a person who owns a mobile phone loses it, it is as if a baby has been lost”. In most cases this is true because people have become very dependent on their phones.
The author then goes into discussing how in certain places it is affecting their economic growth and even religion. There have been religion arguments claiming that mobile phones are replacing the Bible because when a Christian wakes up they pray as well for when they go to sleep. Instead of doing that people go straight to their mobile devices; this makes it seem like phones are taking over and receiving the full attention. The author brings up how watch sellers are blaming phones for running them out of business because phones have the ability to tell time so there would be no need to buy a watch.
People are spending too much time on their phones and as a result of that it is affecting the way we communicate. When people often sit down together they swap stories and laugh with each other but not with the people they are sitting with, it’s the people they are having a conversation with on the phone. It’s not unusual to always have your phone handy at the table, easily in reach to look at pictures, emails, or videos. Cell phones have become an accessory; it’s like a norm. It’s pretty rare to not see a person using their phone.
We have become so dependent on phones to the point where no one really talks face to face anymore. People usually converse by texting or calling an individual. We are compelled to sleep with our phones, which has contributed to our phone addiction. Some people form a text anxiety where texting is their main source of communication. This is affecting the way people can socialize in person. We completely now rely on or mobile devices to communicate.
