AVALANCHE SAFETY

Level 1 Avalanche: Decision Making In Avalanche Terrain (AIARE 1)

The AIARE 1 is a 3 day/24 hour introduction to avalanche hazard management. Students can expect to develop a good grounding in how to prepare for and carry out a trip, to understand basic decision making while in the field, and to learn rescue techniques required to find and dig up a buried person (if an avalanche occurs and someone in the party is caught). At the end of the level one course the student should be able to:

Plan and prepare for travel in and recognize avalanche terrain. Describe a basic framework for avalanche terrain. Learn and apply effective making decisions in avalanche terrain.

Companion rescue.

Students must be physically capable of travel to and in avalanche terrain. Specifically, climb on skis and skins 1600’ vertical feet in 2 hours carrying personal equipment for the day above elevations of 8,000’.
