now entered a phase focused on mechanical, electrical and plumbing installations, commissioning and balancing of the new heating network.
The decarbonisation programme has received support through Salix, the Government’ s Public Sector Decarbonisation Scheme, recognising its contribution to reducing emissions from the historic estate. By combining renewable energy technology with careful conservation, the project demonstrates how heritage buildings can be adapted to meet contemporary environmental objectives without compromising their historic significance.
For Cocksedge, the scheme builds on a long history of work across Cambridge’ s colleges, where refurbishment and conservation projects frequently demand specialist knowledge of historic construction. The Gonville & Caius decarbonisation programme illustrates how those traditional skills are increasingly being combined with modern engineering solutions, creating buildings that continue to serve future generations while responding to the changing demands of sustainability.
