NHBC PIJ QUALITY AWARD- BELLWAY HOMES, WESTERN GRANGE

Western Grange has added national recognition to its growing reputation after Site Manager Bobby Atkinson received an NHBC Pride in the Job Quality Award, highlighting the construction standards being achieved across Bellway Homes’ landmark development in Killingworth.
Long before the first residents moved into Western Grange, the vision for the site was to create a new community rather than simply deliver another housing development. Situated on a 90-acre site at Killingworth Moor, the scheme is transforming former agricultural land into a neighbourhood that blends new homes with extensive green infrastructure and open space.
That approach has now been reinforced through recognition at the NHBC Pride in the Job Awards, where Site Manager Bobby Atkinson has secured a Quality Award for his work on the development. The award is regarded as one of the highest honours for site managers in the UK housebuilding industry, recognising sustained excellence in construction quality, leadership and site management.
Western Grange offers a mix of two, three, four and fivebedroom homes, with the masterplan placing equal emphasis on housing, landscaping and connectivity. Green corridors, open spaces and walking routes have been integrated throughout the development, helping create a setting that reflects the site’ s semi-rural location while remaining within easy reach of Newcastle city centre.
Bellway acquired the site in 2024 following the completion of a land purchase covering approximately 90 acres. Since then, construction has progressed in phases, with the first residents already taking ownership of homes while further areas of the development continue to advance.
The homes themselves have been designed to meet current expectations for energy efficiency and everyday practicality. Contemporary layouts are complemented by features intended to support lower energy use, while the range of property types has been planned to appeal to first-time buyers, growing families and those looking to move within the local area.
Receiving an NHBC Quality Award reflects far more than the appearance of completed homes. Throughout the judging process, site managers are assessed across every aspect of construction, including technical expertise, consistency, organisation, health and safety, leadership and attention to detail. Only a small proportion of the thousands of site managers inspected each year achieve the standard required for recognition.
For Bobby Atkinson, the award marks the first NHBC Quality Award of his career. Having managed Western Grange since construction began in 2024, he has overseen the delivery of the development from its earliest stages, working
