Timber Square on Lavington Street is one of London’ s largest lowcarbon commercial developments, combining retained structure, mass timber construction and new public realm within a major mixed-use redevelopment in Bankside.
Construction at Timber Square in Southwark is entering its final stages as Mace delivers the large-scale redevelopment for Landsec on the former printworks site at 5 – 11 Lavington Street. The project is transforming the brownfield site into a 365,000 sq ft mixed-use campus comprising office accommodation, retail space and landscaped public realm in the heart of Bankside.
Designed as two linked commercial buildings known as Ink and Print, the development has been planned around a new central urban square intended to improve pedestrian connectivity and activate the surrounding streetscape. The public realm will include cafés, retail units, seating and landscaped areas integrated within the wider office campus.
The redevelopment has attracted industry attention for its emphasis on low-carbon construction methods and structural reuse. Around 80 % of the original 1950s printworks structure has been retained within the Print building, significantly reducing demolition waste and embodied carbon associated with new construction.
Alongside retained structural elements, the project incorporates extensive use of cross-laminated timber( CLT) within the new Ink building. Timber Square has
