76 Montagu Hospital- Community Diagnostics Centre
endoscopy suite and ultrasound-equipped clinic rooms in the‘ Rotunda’ building in late 2023, significantly grew the centre’ s diagnostic capabilities.
Phase three now brings a purpose-built building designed by P + HS Architects and delivered by the Integrated Health Projects joint venture— VINCI Building and Sir Robert McAlpine— with Vinci Building as main contractor.
This new addition will house static CT and MRI suites, two ultrasound rooms, a reception, waiting areas, and supporting clinical spaces, alongside a new electrical substation to meet the high power demands of scanning equipment.
By spring 2025, the CDC is scheduled to open its doors, offering capacity for up to 68,000 diagnostic appointments annually— doubling the previous output— along with significantly improved patient experience. Vinci Building notes the new facility will enable around 80,000 appointments per year, equipped with high-efficiency heating, ventilation, air conditioning, improved insulation, and sustainable rooftop technologies, including solar panels and heat pumps— fully aligning with the Trust’ s aim to reach Net Zero emissions by 2040. units, which will remain operational until the new suite is fully commissioned.
The CDC’ s clinical role is already clear. It includes a comprehensive imaging service offering CT, MRI, ultrasound, and an endoscopy suite also used for oral and maxillofacial services, liver screening, and dermoscopy clinics.
These services help relieve pressure on acute hospital sites like Doncaster Royal Infirmary and Bassetlaw, offering patients faster, local access to vital diagnostics-particularly for cancer pathways.
Beyond immediate patient care, the new CDC supports workforce development. The imaging suite is being used as a training hub, hosting radiography apprentices and BSc Diagnostic Radiography candidates, supporting local staff upskilling and new clinical roles.. Staff report a calm, accessible environment designed for patient comfort- a deliberate choice by P + HS Architects to improve the overall experience.
Funding for the Montagu CDC totals over £ 12 million: an initial £ 3 million from South Yorkshire & Bassetlaw Integrated
Construction progressed steadily throughout 2024, marked by a topping-out ceremony in May that celebrated the completion of the building’ s steel structure and the installation of a watertight roof.
Behind the scenes, meticulous work continues on interior installations, the commissioning of medical imaging technology, and preparation of infrastructure to ensure seamless integration with existing mobile
