BELFAST TRUST CANCER CENTRE RECLADDING
The Belfast Trust Cancer Centre Recladding project , spearheaded by Main Contractor , Flynn , has been nominated for the prestigious CEF Health Project of the Year Award .
The project is a vital part of a broader £ 7 million investment plan aimed at enhancing healthcare infrastructure in the local area over the next 20 years .
As part of this investment , a new therapeutic support centre is also being constructed , with completion expected by the end of the year . This centre will be the first of five built by Cancer Focus NI across Northern Ireland , under the charity ’ s five-year cancer strategy .
Flynn ’ s role in the recladding project reflects their extensive expertise in working with public sector clients and delivering critical upgrades to healthcare facilities . The project required the full removal , disposal , design , supply , and installation of new , compliant cladding on the Cancer Centre .
The Company worked closely with the Belfast Trust Estates Team to deliver this ambitious undertaking in phases , ensuring that disruption to hospital staff , patients , and visitors was kept to a minimum .
One of the key challenges of the project was to avoid interrupting emergency access and daily operations at the Cancer Centre and the wider Belfast City Hospital estate .
Contracts Manager Mark Murphy hand-picked an experienced construction team and approved specialist supply chain to ensure seamless communication and execution of the project .
The team ’ s expertise in handling damaged or non-compliant facades made them ideally suited for this complex task , particularly given the need to replace outdated materials that no longer meet modern safety standards .
Flynn ’ s commitment to precision and excellence was evident in Mark Murphy ’ s detailed approach . Before the work began , an in-depth analysis of the building ’ s elements was carried out , including intrusive surveys of the existing façade and substructure . This allowed the team to comprehensively understand the project requirements and align their solutions with fire safety regulations and the aesthetic needs of the Cancer Centre .
The project is being delivered in multiple phases to ensure minimal disruption to the daily operations of the hospital . Phases 1 and 2 have already been completed on schedule , with Phase 1 finishing in May 2024 and Phase 2 following in July 2024 .
The project is currently progressing with Phase 3 underway . By strategically sequencing the removal and reinstallation of the Swisspearl rainscreen cladding , the Flynn team has maintained the operational status quo of the Cancer Centre throughout the entire process .
Flynn ’ s rigorous quality control and testing processes have been a cornerstone of the project . From the removal of the old cladding to the installation of the new system , every stage has been closely monitored to ensure strict compliance with industry standards . Regular inspections and testing ensured the durability , functionality , and aesthetic alignment of the new cladding system .
