SURREY COUNTY COUNCIL - GUILDFORD ROAD HIGHWAY WORKS
Surrey County Council , in conjunction with contractor Ringway , has successfully delivered maintenance works on Guildford Road as part of plans to further improve the county ’ s roads and associated highways infrastructure .
The contract was awarded to Ringway in 2021 , replacing Kier , after the contractor demonstrated its commitment to the requirements set out by the county council .
The works entailed the removal of the gabion baskets which formed the original wingwalls to the culvert that had partially collapsed and replaced them with driven sheet piles .
This ensured that the embankment carrying the A320 over the culvert at this location remains stable and secure for many years to come .
The main works were recently substantially completed following a pause to the works to allow the A3 closure for the M25J10 scheme to take place . Work has just resumed on the final phase of the project to upgrade the parapet on the existing structure and complete the safety barrier and final reinstatement works .
The project typified the challenges faced by many Local Authority Structures Teams to balance the major maintenance requirements of their assets against demands on road space and minimising congestion , as well as constraints imposed on the timing of works by external stakeholders such as the Environment Agency to protect local habitats and wildlife .
Whilst the project was relatively small in terms of physical size and value , its location on the main route between Guildford to Woking required careful design and
