TIDEWAY

Set to revolutionise London ’ s sewage system , the ambitious Thames Tideway project promises cleaner waters and a brighter future for generations to come .
London ’ s iconic River Thames is set for a significant upgrade as the construction of the Thames Tideway Tunnel , also known as the “ Super Sewer ”, nears completion .
The project is a feat of engineering prowess aimed at tackling the age-old issue of sewage overflow into the river . With London ’ s population growing and its Victorian-era sewage system struggling to cope , the need for a modern solution became urgent .
Enter Thames Tideway : a bold endeavour to construct a 25-kilometer tunnel running beneath the riverbed , intercepting sewage overflow and redirecting it for treatment .
The tunnel , which has been constructed up to 67m below London from Acton in the west to Stratford in the east and once complete , will prevent around 95 % of the sewage pollution that currently spills directly into the River Thames .
With the construction of the heavy engineering nearing completion , the system is due to start to be tested and commissioned later this year and will take away flows of polluting sewage into the tunnel to protect the river for the first time . This will significantly reduce the amount of untreated sewage entering the Thames , contributing to a cleaner and healthier river .
The project is not just about environmental benefits . The “ Super Sewer ” is also expected to create a lasting legacy for London . The construction process has utilized innovative techniques , minimising disruption to the city while creating new jobs and opportunities .
As well as protecting the waterway from pollution , the Tideway project has created seven new pieces of public space along the river for the public to enjoy views of London with mini parks built over the top of where the tunnel access points will be .
One of the most important sites on the Tideway project is also set to transform . Blackfriars Bridge Foreshore will intercept spills into the Thames – and will be home to a beautiful new piece of public land when construction finishes .
With most of the complex underground infrastructure now covered , work on the new public space is taking shape . Tideway ’ s Blackfriars Bridge Foreshore site sits in the City of
