The site will incorporate a raft of sustainability measures , including on-site renewable energy generation from a 3800m2 ( 783KWp ) solar panel array , which is expected to produce approximately 600,000kwh of electricity per year to generate power for the hub . Solar panels have been installed on top of the reuse and recycling centre , the vehicle workshop and the MRF buildings .
Fabric first buildings constructed using energy efficient materials will minimise the energy needed to heat and cool them , collected rainwater will be reused for vehicle washing and plant watering .
The facility was designed and built to operate under an Environmental Permit , with pollution control measures for fugitive emissions of noise , air , litter , odour , drainage and interceptor systems and fire prevention and detection systems .
Main contractor , Farrans , has been involved since the start of the project , beginning preparatory work to secure and prepare the site in February 2022 before starting on the main construction works . Phase 2 is due for completion at the end of this year .
As part of a Social Value Plan agreed with the council at the start of the project , Farrans is working with partners in Keynsham and the wider Bath and North East Somerset area during the construction to provide employment and training opportunities , support the local economy and engage with educational and community initiatives . The aim is to build on the council ’ s investment in the Keynsham Recycling Hub by creating local jobs and helping to raise the profile of construction and recycling and waste services as a career path for a new generation of school leavers .
