60 challenge – how to create a four-storey roof extension with a penthouse and a five-storey mega-basement as deep as the hotel is high .
When plans for the extension were first explored over a decade ago , it was thought that the hotel would need to close its doors throughout the construction period . However , a plan was developed that allowed the hotel to remain open as the work was undertaken .
The hotel has considered the welfare of its staff through the creation of luxurious and extensive back of house facilities , including a full catering kitchen , restaurant and rest area , changing facilities , showers and laundry .
This prestigious refurbishment project served to highlight both the skill and well-earned reputation of Mastercraft Construction has to undertake projects of this scale and importance .
The project saw Mastercraft Construction undertake work on the building to provide additional guest suites and the creation customer services and staff facilities beneath the existing Grade II listed hotel .
The scheme included internal and external work including alterations to the roof comprising removal of rooftop plant rooms and associated structures and construction of additional two stories to provide 40 new guest rooms with prime new penthouse suites among them .
Work was undertaken on the elevations on Brook Street , Davies Street and Brook ’ s Mews ; and excavation carried out at basement level to provide five new basement levels .
These new basement levels will host an extensive range of facilities including two spas – one a treatment-led environment with a swimming pool and gym , while the other includes a 25m swimming pool , which will be available for use for both Claridge ’ s guests and members .
