101 and conserve tenements , ensuring that this historic form of property can be enjoyed by future generations .
Montgomery Street forms part of Willliam H Playfair ’ s Eastern New Town ( or Calton ) Scheme designed in 1818 . Playfair was one of Scotland ’ s most influential architects and designed many prominent Edinburgh building , including The National Gallery ( 1848 ), Surgeons Hall ( 1829 ), and the City Observatory on Calton Hill ( 1818 ) to name a few . Montgomery Street is valuable as it is one of the few Calton Scheme streets that was built to Playfair ’ s original designs .
On 79-83 Montgomery Street , Edinburgh World Heritage will be helping the co-proprietors to carry out external fabric repairs , including structural repairs as a result of subsidence , stonework repairs to the front elevation and chimneys , selective repointing with traditional lime mortar , and repairs to roof slating , leadwork and rainwater goods .
Wellington Street is another street that was built as part of Playfair ’ s Calton Scheme and is one of the radial streets springing from Hillside Crescent .
The crescent was designed to follow the contours of the land on the north side of Calton Hill . Constructed from smooth ashlar between 1878 – 1892 , Wellington Street presents a handsome streetscape .
However , the lead flashings at the edges of the roof have come to the end of their life cycle and are vulnerable to water ingress without constant attention and repair ; the chimney stacks ’ stonework is also crumbling .
The conservation project will methodically inspect the roof , rainwater disposal and high-level stonework , and replace and renew the failed elements .
