As Mayor of the City of Custer City, I would like to welcome you to our beautiful community in the Black Hills of South Dakota.
Custer has an abundance of history, including General George Armstrong’ s Expedition through the Black Hills in 1874, resulting in the discovery of gold along French Creek located just outside Custer. The gold discovery prompted prospectors to rush to the area in hopes of striking it rich. Soon after the beginning of the gold rush, Custer City was founded in 1875.
Allow Custer City to be your base while visiting the multitude of outdoor wonders, including Custer State Park, Jewell Cave National Park, Wind Cave National Park, Crazy Horse Mountain, and the Mount Rushmore National Monument.
In addition to the main attractions, you are close to a wide variety of outdoor activities, such as hiking, biking, horseback riding, rock climbing, viewing wildlife, motorcycle rallies, a museum, and shopping. You can access the Mickelson Trail System at a trailhead located in Custer.
Custer City offers you a wide variety of lodging options: motels, campgrounds, VRBO’ s and dispersed camping in the Black Hills National Forest.
