We are so excited to have you on the cover of Curvysta. Thanks for taking the time to chat.
Thank you. I'm so blown away, I'm speechless. I don't know what to say about it. I'm honored.
Let's start off with the basics. Where are you from?
I'm from Elmont, N.Y. I'm a Long Island girl. I went to private school in Brooklyn and then I went to public school in Long Island.
How did you get on the show, Big Women:Big Love?
Actually a guy who used to like me, sent me the casting call. I answered the questions as "Sabrina" as possible. (...giggles)
I blinked and they flew me out to Los Angeles and they started filming.
You seem to be your true self on camera. Unaffected and natural.
Where does that come from?
I was just myself, that's it. I wasn't sure how I would feel with all the cameras but it was fine.
I also used to do improv.
Really? I can see that. You're quick and super witty. It seems as if you're always thinking of what's next.
I was in a sketch comedy group. The Upright Citizens Brigade. They had a diversity scholarship and I got it. I took 101 and ran with it. I did tons of sketches and comedy. I walked in and they took a chance on me.
I also improv'ed for another web series. It was fun for me because everyone thinks I'm so nice and I got to play a sassy waitress.
What does your family think about you being on a reality show?
My parents were happy. They weren't into it in the beginning. Despite what they said, I fought for it. My big brother said, "I better not see you with any men."(...more giggles)
They are super proud. This is the Sabrina they've known and now the world gets to see it.
Congrats on signing with a modeling agency!
Sabrina signed a freelance contract with Bicoastal Model Management.
Crazy!(...she laughs) Everything I've ever wanted to happen has happened in the last couple of months. The face of plus size is changing. I know that I don't look typical but there was something special about me that made them want to work with me and represent me. My work with Ashley Stewart, as well.
I would've never been in contact with the decision makers if it wasn't for the show.
That's right. You guys met during PNO.
Sabrina was the stylist for Plus Night Out during NYFW 2014 and for the Fall 2014 issue of Curvysta magazine.
When did you start styling?
When I was younger, I was obsessed with taking things apart and making things look better. My mother used to sew and she taught me that.
What would you like to do next?
I would love to do stuff with Tess Holiday(plus model recently signed with MILK). In London, there is a self esteem team. They hold classes in the UK, where they teach girls how to have self esteem. I would love to be involved in some way.
On the show, you give such great advice and positive energy. It seems as if you truly love your body, although I noticed some weight loss. Why did you start losing?
I guess for me my favorite thing is that people aren't just looking at me, they are listening to me. Viewers say that I'm positive and funny. They call me Pollyanna sometimes. I used to be
