Determining assessments Baseline assessment Baseline assessments are done at the beginning of the school year to establish whether learners meet the basic skills and knowledge required to proceed with the workload of the grade ahead. They also provide the teacher with an indication of the areas in which the learner may require additional attention. Diagnostic assessment Diagnostic assessments are often conducted at a young age, or when a new learner enters the school. They are used to gain greater insight into specific learning problems or problem areas that have the potential to hinder the learner’s performance. Teachers would implement appropriate intervention to assist learners in overcoming these challenges early in their school careers.
