Lego wall at the
Castle
Some children love to move and this Lego wall offers
an opportunity to play while standing and moving –
creating a sensory experience. The engagement of
the back and core muscles by kneeling and standing
helps to develop core strength and posture, which
is another benefit. The most important thing is that
children have fun!

Life cycle of silkworms
The Group 5s of Curro Castle Bryanston learned about
silkworms; just in time to witness the completion of
their life cycle. The children brought mulberry leaves
for the silkworms and watched as they spinned their
cocoons. The cocoons could be placed on to different
shapes to spin patterns. After the process, the children
demonstrated the event on paper plates in their
own way. Each child’s expression was personal and
individual to them.

Bookworm’s birthday
On Friday, 23 February, the Castle celebrated a very special friend’s birthday. The Castle’s dear old
friend, Bennie Bookworm, came to school to spend the morning with the children.
Bennie and the stars’ morning were full of treats, eats and lovely new stories. All the stars and the
teachers dressed up as their favourite book character to surprise Bennie Bookworm. He was blown
away with how amazing everyone looked and how much effort the stars had put into their costumes!
Bennie Bookworm has asked to thank each and every star, mom and dad for the awesome new
books he received for his birthday.

BRYANSTON
Curro Castle Aurora has added a vertical surface
Lego wall to its facilities and this has added so many
benefits to the learning-through-play initiative. This
form of vertical play encourages children to use bigger
arm movements – developing their strength and
flexibility in their arms and joints. Children use both
hands, creating the opportunity for midline crossing
and the practising of hand dominance. Children also
extend their wrists, which helps with pencil grasp and
the task performed is closer to the child’s eyes which
develops hand-eye coordination. Another benefit is
that children get the opportunity to become aware of
‘up and down’ and ‘left and right’ in relation to their
own bodies.

Two of the children from Curro
Castle Bankenveld excelled
in the A+Students Regional
Championship. The regionals
took place in Middelburg in June
2018. This is a Mathematics-
based programme that forms part
of the extramural activities of the
nursery school. Elrie Geldenhuys
was presented with the
champions award and Pabalelo
Marule received the champion
of champions award.
