Danone Nations Cup Making the move
Curro Academy Wilgeheuwel’s under 12s took part in the Danone Nations Cup at St David’s Marist.
The Danone Nations Cup is the world’s greatest soccer tournament for children between the ages
of 10 and 12 (under 12s category). It has been held every year since 2000 on the initiative of the
Groupe Danone. Every year 2,5 million children from over 34 000 schools and 11 000 clubs from
around the globe take part in local, regional and then national Danone Nations Cup competitions
before the winners fly off to compete in the grand world final. In each of the 32 participating
countries, Danone’s subsidiaries organise their national tournaments in partnership with the local
sports federations and/or state education and sports ministers. Curro Academy Wilgeheuwel’s under
12s finished second in their group. Congratulations! Capricorn District Chess hosted seven qualifying tournaments for the primary school
and five qualifying tournaments for the high school in 2018. The tournaments
were mostly played at Meridian Northern Academy, at the two campuses.
The players had to play five tournaments during the year and had to have a
high rating to be able to represent the Capricorn District at the South African
Junior Chess Championship in Boksburg. Three of Northern Academy’s under 14
players met the requirements. Well done to Maubane Kamogelo, Mukhari Ntiyiso
and Thaba Kgaugelo.

NORTHERN
Girl power
After becoming the 2018 champions of Thatchfield’s annual tournament, the soccer girls from
Meridian Northern Academy went on to represent Limpopo Province in the Global Goals World
Cup Tournament (GGWCUP) which was held in Alexandra, Johannesburg. South Africa is the
second country in Africa to host the tournament after it was held in Kenya in 2017. This is a global
women’s amateur soccer championship. The Global Goals World Cup South Africa was hosted by
Save the Children South Africa (SCSA) in association with the Royal Danish Embassy and the Embassy of Ireland.
ACADEMY
The learners’ journey began with the provincial play-offs, which was held at Northern Academy. They competed against
three other teams who won their districts. The girls won all their games to be crowned the provincial champions. This paved
the way for them to play in the Global Goals World Cup where they won two of their three games. Ladies’ soccer is now
getting the recognition that it deserves.

Northern Academy continued to produce wonderful performances and
results in soccer around the province.
Everst Kola and Mashoto Nyaka are
soccer stars in the making.
The under 15 boys won Curro Thatchfield’s annual soccer challenge without
losing any games this year and they became the champions for the third time
in a row. Mashoto Nyaka became the player of the tournament and Everest
Kola became the goalkeeper of the tournament. They were awarded a trophy
and a gold medal. Well done to these two stars. Meridian Northern Academy
also won the Polokwane Central Schools Soccer League under 15 final for the
third time.
The school looks forward to a winning streak again next year and wants to
dominate in the Curro Nationals squad.
Premier
MERIDIAN grass
PINEHURST
league
During the 2017 girls’ hockey season, the
coaching staff of Meridian Pinehurst identified
the need for an official league amongst grass
playing schools. As Meridian Pinehurst is
known for its pioneering skills, the coaching
staff started an invitational premier grass league
for under 19, under 16 and under 14 hockey
girls and so the Meridian Pinehurst premier
grass league was born.

sponsored by the
captain’s mom, to end
off the hockey season.
The main aim of the league was not only
to promote hockey participation at the
participating schools, but also to promote
sportsmanship. Hence the league motto for
2018: Humble in victory, gracious in defeat.
This year was a great success and many of the
players were able to make new friends. At the
end of the day the girls realised that it was
more about being able to participate on the
day than the score line at the end of the game.
