MAKING AN ARGUMENT
(LANMA)
Students in this course will learn the essentials of public speaking, including components of argumentation, debate,
and vocal projection. Highly recommended for students with political and business leanings, as well as those
interested in studying theatre, this course will also improve argumentation skills for students in text writing,
academia, speech writing, and in their daily lives. Recommended level: III
CREATIVE WRITING I
(LANC1)
Students in this course will learn methods of style for writing poetry and short story as well as the many bases for
character development. Honest and comprehensive evaluation will assist students in improving their own writing as
well as analyzing the work of published authors. Prerequisite: None. Students taking this course may also be
interested in LANC2 (Writing for Writers) Recommended level: I or II.
CREATIVE WRITING II
(LANC2)
This course is meant for students who wish to pursue a post-secondary humanities education and/or a career in
writing. Students will learn methods of style for writing poetry and short story as well as the many bases for
character development. Honest and comprehensive evaluation of texts will assist students in improving their own
writing as well as analyzing the work of published authors. Students will expand their writing skills while learning
about contests, query letters, how to maximize their skills, the self-publication market, marketing, and industry
standards. Prerequisites: At least one academic language course (junior or senior level), LANOG, LANC1
Recommended level: III or IIII.
SPOKEN WORD POETRY
(ENGSP)
Cross listed with THAOM: contemporary movement. What do rap music, Jack Kerouac, and dub poetry have in
common? Spoken word poetry. Students will learn contemporary movement and the spoken word poetry of
multiple regions and cultures, as well as the elements that come together to create a well-written and –acted spoken
word and contemporary movement piece. Recommended level: II or III.
