" Currents “ debuts !

The September issue is the first one to use the magazine format , reverted to the original A4 size . It has a new name and the new club logo designed by Marinell Haegelin . The debut issue is edited by Becky Tan . Both women are still active club members and valued Currents contributors today .

A Topical Retrospective

In 1992 , corporations still shuffled key employees to global branches ; numerous wives put children into international schools and careers on hold . Everything foreign was gobbled with gusto until the absence of English-speaking camaraderie propelled many “ passing through ” Hamburg to the American Women ’ s Club .

As a new member , I met Lisa Iervolino and we discovered our backgrounds coincided in marketing and advertising , i . e ., Lisa , wordsmith , and me , artist . She was contributing editor for the club ’ s A5-sized newsletter that was printed monthly with editors Holly Holst and Becky Tan ; during July / August , Becky sent out a two-page xeroxed “ summer newsletter .” The treasure trove of information covered news relative to living in Germany / Hamburg , book reviews , photographs , an events calendar , recipes , consulate and FAWCO news , healthcare information , members ’ tips and letters to the editor , advertising , etc . Computer technology was in its infancy , so the newsletter was the equivalent , you could say , of last century ’ s telegraph messages .
Lisa roped me into redesigning the AWCH newsletter and logo under the auspices of Holly , Becky , and then-president Roxayn Ball . Initially , Lisa and I simply changed its format from A5 to A4 and brainstormed the name Currents , with
