The Mountains Sing is a beautifully written novel that intertwines the experiences of a young woman and her grandmother through two pivotal eras in Vietnam ’ s history . The poetic writing and richly drawn characters lend beauty to the otherwise difficult events depicted in the book . For those of us who didn ’ t learn much about the impact of Vietnam in history class , this book is an open invitation to explore the country from the perspective of one family , from the 1930s through the present day .

In her book , Mai leads us through history , letting us feel the brutality of humanity , but comforting us with beautiful descriptions of the surrounding nature and showing the great power of family bonds .
