5:00pm at Founders Park, 316 NE 3rd St.
The City of Pompano Beach is honored to
announce the dedication of its newest piece of public
art, a memorial for the tragic events that took place
on September 11th, 2001. The ceremony will be held
on Wednesday, September 11th at 5:00 p.m. at
Founders Park located at 201 NE 3rd Avenue. The
City’s Fire Rescue Department acquired a piece of
steel from the World Trade Center for use in a
memorial for the 343 first responders who died sav-
ing lives on September 11, 2001. The Public Art
Committee was asked by the department to utilize
the steel as a public art project. Project development
originally began in 2016. The dedication ceremony is
free and open to the public. In March 2018 the City’s
Public Art Committee issued a Call to Artists. Out of
the applications submitted, the glass and corten steel
memorial, entitled Unbroken Spine, A Book of Ameri-
can Heroism, Cherie Saleeby, was selected. The art-
work is located at Founders Park next to Pompano
Beach’s fire museum. Fire Chief John Jurgle said,
“We are thrilled to have such a beautiful memorial
honoring all the first responders who lost their lives
on September 11th. This memorial and what it is
constructed from, the steel from the towers, repre-
sents the strength and fortitude of those who gave
their lives that day. We will Never Forget!” The
exposed steel in the artwork symbolizes the back-
bone of the first responders and their resolute
courage. The steel also represents the spine of a
bound book helping to keep the pages together.
Etched onto the glass pages are the names of the
first responders who lost their lives. The City’s Public
Art Committee would like to cordially invite you to the
Dedication Ceremony. Please make sure to mark
your calendars to attend this very special dedication.
