thing new - something that is not part of your experi-
ence.
You see changes - some you like, and others you
don’t. Suddenly you realize that you are an outsider
looking in at a place that is no longer familiar. Then,
albeit with a touch of melancholy, you understand
why. Your memories are locked in the past, while the
place, as you once knew it, has moved into the pres-
ent.
I experienced these bittersweet emotions last
June when I revisited Florence - Firenze, as the Ital-
ians call it. Having lived and worked there for 25
years, I know the city well, and feel deeply attached
to its magnificent traditions and artistic splendor. Of
course, I realized that the city would not be the
same, but I was unprepared for the extent of the
changes.
Today Florence is being suffocated by the inva-
sion of tourists who have literally “occupied” the his-
toric center. Hordes of people from all over the world
swarm through the streets - pushing, shouting,
