Known as Ireland's Garden, Wicklow lies just south of Dublin, along the Irish Sea coast. Inland, there is a lush greenness, a botanical diversity framing glacial lakes. The Wicklow mountain range, reaching 3,035 feet, adds dra- matic staging to stone cottages and regal manor houses. Here, one dwells in a movie set. Explorers can enjoy the Wicklow Way, an 80-mile marked walking trail, or drive (on the left) over winding lanes. The county (33 miles long and 23 miles wide) holds many pubs, ready to serve up Guinness (a dark dry stout) or hearty meals-mutton-based Irish Stew, or seafood (cod and mild-flavored salmon}. Sheep match in number Ireland's 2017 human population of 4.7 mil- lion. (Northern Ireland, part of Great Britain, has an additional 1.8 million people. The Republic of Ireland, five-sixths of the island, is “Ireland.”) Ireland's Great Hunger (Famine), between 1845 and 1852, shaped its modern history. A blight, which caused potato crops to fail, cruelly halved Ireland's 1841 population of 8.175 million. At least one million succumbed to disease, and several million emigrated, many to the U.S. Some 34.5 million Americans claim Irish ancestry. Grazing sheep were introduced, not for food in the Hunger years, but to force more tenant farm- ers from landowners' holdings. The Famine was government-caused, as Ireland exported food during the potato failures. Lic#16-CRP18810-X continued on page 13 >
