Words That Shield Us
Words are one of our greatest resources. Since
words open and close the doors of human communication, people have developed special techniques
to exploit their power.
They have created
euphemisms (derived from a Greek root meaning
“use of words of good omen”) to promote social
harmony. These safe, often vague words replace
harsh, offensive ones. Euphemisms allow speakers to
mention a taboo topic as long as they do not use
