To man the sugar plantations, the European
colonists imported slaves from Africa. Working the
cane fields and the refineries was a dangerous, gru-
eling job where the death rate from overwork, illness
or horrible punishments was enormous. The sweet
sugar that the slaves produced contrasted with the
bitterness of their lives.
Today the sugar saga continues. Fortunately
harvesting and processing this crop have been
industrialized - a change that has spared people
from the cruel conditions of the past. But sugar,
albeit in different ways, continues to take a toll on
humans.
Sugar is sweet, but too much is dangerous.
Today the low cost of sugar and its addictive quality
have created many health problems, in particular the
obesity crisis. Just read the labels of the food and
drinks you purchase, and you’ll be shocked to see
how much sugar you consume daily.
If we don’t control our love of sugar, this story
will have a bitter ending. So now is the time to start
a new chapter!
