Working the cane fields and the refineries was a dangerous, gru- eling job where the death rate from overwork, illness or horrible punishments was enormous. The sweet sugar that the slaves produced contrasted with the bitterness of their lives. Today the sugar saga continues. Fortunately harvesting and processing this crop have been industrialized - a change that has spared people from the cruel conditions of the past. But sugar, albeit in different ways, continues to take a toll on humans. Sugar is sweet, but too much is dangerous. Today the low cost of sugar and its addictive quality have created many health problems, in particular the obesity crisis. Just read the labels of the food and drinks you purchase, and you’ll be shocked to see how much sugar you consume daily. If we don’t control our love of sugar, this story will have a bitter ending.
