Common Core The state-led effort to develop the Common Core State Standards was launched in 2009 by state lead- ers, including governors and state commissioners of education from 48 states, two territories and the Dis- trict of  Columbia, through their membership in the  National Gov- ernors Association Center for Best Practices. Positions Mayor Gillum has not men- tioned the Standards, but does support Expanded Pre-K Representative DeSantis is against Core Standards and Pre- K. He is against any national standard for education and sup- ports local control, no matter how poor the district. Both support technical and vocational training. Economy Representative DeSantis sup- ports Amendment 5 (Requires 2/3 vote of legislature to impose or increase tax or fee requiring a Supermajority vote of the legisla- ture to increase taxes or raise revenue), which Currents sug- gests voting against. Mayor Gilliam would raise cor- porate taxes to further fund edu- cation. He also supports funding education with legal marijuana sales taxes. Representative DeSantis has not mentioned marijuana and he does not have a plank for it on his website, so one can presume his position mirrors the party’s.
