Amy (from the French “aimée”) was beloved, while
Linda and Belinda (from the Spanish “linda”) were
pretty.
Parents sometimes name their daughters after
gemstones such as Diamond, Opal, Emerald, Crys-
tal, Ruby, Pearl, Margaret (pearl in Greek), Jade,
Jewel or Amber (Note 1). Others prefer names
inspired by precious metals - Goldie, Aurelia (golden
in Latin) or Argenta (silver in Latin).
Names such as April, May, June and Augusta are
months of the year. Estelle means star, while Celeste
clearly refers to the heavens. Rosemary conjures up
the lovely image of dew rising from the sea. Dawn is
self-explanatory.
Let’s not forget the names inspired by colors.
Scarlett O’Hara’s fiery temperament reflected the
intensity of her red hair. Bianca (white in Italian)
implies purity. Indigo sends a mysterious message
because of its association with a deep blue-purple
color. Ebony is an exotic name reminiscent of the
precious black wood from a tree of the same name.
