MUSIC From Baroque Complexity to Classical Purity
The Baroque period( c. 1600 – 1750) is one of the great moments of European music. It was an era of innovation when musicians experimented with new forms- the concerto, sonata, oratorio and cantata. The rich, complex melodies expressed the composers’ emotions.
Baroque music started in Italy. The most famous musician was Antonio Vivaldi, who, for most of his life, worked as a music teacher and composer in an orphanage in Venice. His pupils often gave public performances.
Vivaldi’ s musicality and technique made him one of the Baroque masters. He was a prolific composer who wrote oratorios, sonatas, and hundreds of concertos. His masterpiece is The Four Seasons. In this hauntingly beautiful concerto, he captures the changing mood of each season.
The Baroque style spread to Germany where it reached new heights with Johann Sebastian Bach. This great Baroque master spent most of his life as organist in a Lutheran church. He composed many religious works, including more than 250 cantatas!
Unfortunately Bach’ s works did not receive international recognition until more than 100 years after his death. The six Brandenburg Concertos are among his many masterpieces. In the Mass in B Minor, he captures the power of the Christian tradition.
