C
ity says No Storage for
You! At least for six
months. After paying another con-
sultant, the City discovered it is
way above the per capita rating
for number of self-storage units.
Vice Mayor Barry Moss said they
are “hulking buildings” that
employ a handful of people and
bring very little revenue or eco-
nomic development to the city.
With the proliferation of robotic
retrieval systems, even fewer
jobs will be created if more area
is allowed. The best way to con-
trol the growth is to change the
property tax designation.
Currently Pompano Beach has
28 self-storage facilities or about
21 square feet of self-storage
space per resident. As a compar-
ison, the self-storage market in
Fort Lauderdale was also found
to be oversaturated, but not as
much as in Pompano Beach. In
Fort Lauderdale, which has a
population of approximately
180,000, there are 26 self-stor-
age facilities, and about 8.6
square feet of self-storage.
Nationwide, there are approxi-
mately 45,500 self-storage facili-
ties, and 5.4 square feet of self-
storage space per U.S. resident.
In Florida, there are approxi-
mately 2,600 self-storage facili-
ties, and 6.3 square feet of self-
storage space per resident.
In June, the Planning and
Zoning Board voted unanimously
to recommend to the City Com-
mission that the moratorium be
enacted.

Just as the beach and park
development have been touted
as a central gathering place for
dining, shopping, living and
recreating. The planned mixed
used PUD envisions apartments
and restaurant, along with small
services and professional compa-
nies. A lot of planning for a place
which could be under water a
large percentage of time in the
not so distant future.
While this writer is all for
mixed use living centered around
transportation corridors. But the
reality is that most folks are
NIMBY about it. It’s great, but it’s
not for me. The living is too
dense.
Perhaps the City should be
spending money on ground and
potable water insurance, along
with renewable power sources
from the small coast to which it
has access. As well as planning
for utilities and building power
access and generators above the
fourth floor for new construction.
Hopefully someone is merging
the future realities with the cur-
