In Fort Lauderdale, which has a population of approximately 180,000, there are 26 self-stor- age facilities, and about 8.6 square feet of self-storage. Nationwide, there are approxi- mately 45,500 self-storage facili- ties, and 5.4 square feet of self- storage space per U.S. resident. In Florida, there are approxi- mately 2,600 self-storage facili- ties, and 6.3 square feet of self- storage space per resident. In June, the Planning and Zoning Board voted unanimously to recommend to the City Com- mission that the moratorium be enacted. Millennial Park Just as the beach and park development have been touted as a central gathering place for dining, shopping, living and recreating. The planned mixed used PUD envisions apartments and restaurant, along with small services and professional compa- nies. A lot of planning for a place which could be under water a large percentage of time in the not so distant future. While this writer is all for mixed use living centered around transportation corridors. But the reality is that most folks are NIMBY about it. It’s great, but it’s not for me. The living is too dense. Perhaps the City should be spending money on ground and potable water insurance, along with renewable power sources from the small coast to which it has access. As well as planning for utilities and building power access and generators above the fourth floor for new construction.
