You may prefer to call it a dog, weiner, frank- furter or frank. Now let’s explore the “story” behind the names for this popular food. As far back as the 1800’s, dog was a slang term for sausage -hopefully not one made from dog meat! When the sausage was cooked, it was very hot. The best way to avoid burned fingers was putting the hot dog inside a sliced bun. The frankfurter or frank origi- nated in the German city of Frankfurt, which has traditionally been famous for its pork sausages. The weiner instead was “born” in the Austrian capital Vienna (Wein in German). According to some sources, a German butcher, who had moved to this city, introduced a new ver- sion of the frankfurter. To attract Austrian customers, he mixed beef and pork so that his sausages would have a distinc- tive flavor. Now let’s move from simple fare to haute cuisine. Oysters Rockefeller, a culinary delight born in New Orleans in 1889 (Note 1), is a perfect example. continued on page 20 > UP BRAKE SPECIAL 95 $ LUBE & FILTER Up to 5 Qts.
