What exactly is communica-
tion? This word, derived from a
Latin verb meaning to share,
refers to an exchange or sharing
of messages. The exchange can
be oral or written. It occurs
between two or more individuals.
Oral communication involves
speaking and listening. We can
do so either face-to-face or on the
phone. Communication is suc-
cessful when the listener under-
stands our message and replies.
When the listener doesn’t under-
stand or doesn’t hear our mes-
sage, this is an example of non-
communication. In this case, we
have two options: repeat the mes-
sage and hope for the best, or
walk away.
There is also a third and per-
haps more dangerous possibility
– that is, mis-comunication. This
happens when the listener hears
our message, but misunderstands
all or part of it. Mis-communica-
tion is often hard to detect. We
may not be aware that the listener
has misunderstood, so we just
keep on talking. The more we
say, the more the misunderstand-
ing grows. Not surprisingly, mis-
communication can cause serious
