You've got to do your own growing, no mat ter how tall your grandfather is. Civilization is a slow process of learning to be kind. Clever people needn't be good, they can simulate. A lean compromise is better than a fat law suit. A boaster and a liar are cousins. There are men so conservative they believe nothing should be done for the first time. You can't fool all of the people all of the time but it isn't necessary. If your desires be endless, your cares will be so too. At a round table there's no dispute of place. No one is a fool always, everyone sometimes. Horse sense is what keeps horses from betting on what people will do. Generosity consists not in the sum given, but the manner in which it is bestowed. He who lives on hope has but a slender diet. Stand still and let the world go by - and it will.
