Although they contradict science and defy logic, they are powerful forces that influence our behavior. Some superstitions deal with good luck. Make a wish when you see a falling star or a new moon. A four-leaf clover will bring you good luck. If you give someone a wallet as a present, be sure to add a coin. In this way, the wallet will never be empty. For a happy marriage, a bride should wear “something old, something new, something borrowed and some- thing blue.” Americans knock on wood for good luck, but Italians prefer to touch iron. Other superstitions deal with bad luck. Breaking a mirror will bring you seven years of bad luck. Walking under a ladder is a “no-no.” If a black cat crosses your path, turn around immedi- ately and walk in the opposite direction. To avoid bad luck, don’t open an umbrella in the house or put a hat on the bed. Some superstitions involve bad luck numbers. In the West, thirteen is generally considered continued on page 15 >
