Today, Passau’s main draw is St. Stephen’s
Cathedral, a Baroque gem, with its organ of 17,974
pipes. This pipe organ was long the largest in the
world, until the expansion of that in the First Congre-
gational Church in Los Angeles. From May through
September, St. Stephens provides daily concerts
which are, alone, reason to visit. [See photo.]
Overlooking Passau is Veste Oberhaus, a 13th
Century fortress, now a city museum.

For cyclists, the Donau (Danube) Cycle Path,
which runs 300 kilometers (186.41 miles) along the
Danube from Passau to Vienna, Austria, is a magnet.
In six or eight days of easy riding, one can visit
charming small towns before entering the grand
boulevards (rings) of Vienna. Solo riders are as
common as are riding groups. Even novice riders
find this flat route accessible. Tour companies pro-
vide a variety of cycling programs, often with four-
star hotel options. Why not burn calories acquired,
thanks to the delicious German cuisine, by cycling?
Passau is easy to reach from Munich’s Franz
Josef Strauss airport, just 75.7 miles by car, or 2
hours by train, for about $48 USD, first class.
As in any European town, dark memories of WWII
attach, with Passau being no exception. But, to visi-
tors, Passau offers a shining example of optimism
amidst centuries of drama and change.
