Currents July 2017 3 Abortive Actions C urrents has written many times about societal pen- dulum swings and the associated political policy swings. It is an existential “chicken or egg” ques- tion, wrapped in the enigma of human tendencies to choose to believe perception and philoso- phies over realities' facts. Capitalism's policies create tension between labor and capi- tal; Politics reflects that tension and it is expressed in policies by those in power. Those out of power spend all their time riling about the opposing position; whether they fully support that position or not. Since Ronald Reagan took control of the Republican Party, the Party has espoused one single economic/social edict; Personal Responsibility equals small gov- ernment. This single bumper sticker command has fed the desire to rid “The People” of the menace of Federal Government intrusion. With Conservatives supporting the philosophy have lobbied and voted for less and less federal government. Result- ing in political policies support- ing Capital against Labor, expressed in Supply Side Eco- nomics. Progressives have engaged in the ongoing battle between those who have seen the states as workshops where bold policy ideas can be tested and brought to Washington, and those on the right, who have looked on the states as places where overreach- ing federal policy can be con- strained. Progressives have pushed sec- ular agendas which were unex- pectedly supported by a conser- vative Supreme Court. Resulting in a swift and massive societal changes away from traditional and religious beliefs launching non-traditional marriage and gender identities supported by Hollywood in everyday television and movies. Despite ALEC's work, Progres- sive States like California and Minnesota are experimenting with a progressive mindset. This has resulted in thirty years being consumed by policy paraly- sis, with each party attempting to create policy while in power only to have those policies softened or ended when they are out of power. Resulting in slow small policy changes. Feasibly as it needs to be govern the country.
