unprepared. As the Carthaginians moved south-
ward, they defeated the Romans in several important
battles.
Hannibal's brilliant war strategy worked because
he understood the importance of surprise. The
Romans had expected an attack by sea, but not one
by land. The Carthaginian general knew how to use
geography to his advantage.
Despite his overwhelming victories, Hannibal
never conquered Rome.
He was recalled to
Carthage because the leaders there feared an attack
from the Romans. So Hannibal prepared the
Carthaginian army for war.
In October of 202 BC, a shrewd Roman general,
later known as Scipio Africanus, defeated Hannibal's
army in the bloody Battle of Zama. Almost 20,000
died, while another 20,000 were taken prisoner.
Hannibal escaped, went into exile, and finally com-
mitted suicide.
Despite the stunning victory at Zama, the
Romans still thirsted for revenge. Like Hannibal, they
too understood the importance of geography. They
knew that whoever controlled the narrow sea pas-
sage between Carthage and the Italian peninsula
controlled the trade routes in the entire Mediter-
ranean.
For this reason, Carthage must be
destroyed.
