Japanese an important book on navigation science, he wrote the first “how to learn English”
textbook for Japanese students. He was appointed
professor at Kaisei University (now Tokyo
University). Before his death in 1898, he had the
opportunity to meet his mentor/friend, Captain
Whitfield in the US.
Manjiro's incredible story demonstrates how
curiosity, education and foreign language skills
enrich our lives and even help us change the
world. This is a lesson well worth remembering
and one that we should pass on to our children.
NOTE: In 19th century Japan, ordinary people
like Manjiro had only one name. In the US,
Manjiro was known as John Mung. Thanks to his
outstanding service to Japan, Manjiro was permitted to take a second name, thus becoming
Manjiro Nakahama.
