In 1925 , dozens of workers hand-lowered tons of cast iron pipe into cold February bay waters , and onto the Dumbarton Strait floor . It was the Hetch Hetchy Water System ’ s first transbay pipeline , now known as Bay Division Pipeline No . 1 .
The men here were just a few of the thousands who helped build the 167-mile aqueduct . Note the garb of the time — devoid of today ’ s hard hats , safety vests , and other required protective gear . Today our system provides drinking water to 2.6 million people in the Bay Area .
