A Brief history of Palm Aire
P
alm Aire had its start in
1959 as home to the
Palms Golf Course founded by
George Palmer and Harold
Broiler. Simultaneously, Marvin
Orleans attended flight school in
the Florida during World War II
and returned to Fort Lauderdale
post war. So, in the same year
that the Palms Golf Course was
founded, Marvin Orleans formed
Florida Palm Aire Corporation. At
its inception, Palm Aire was a
country club featuring golf, but in
a matter of years it was trans-
formed into a master-planned
community featuring five golf
courses and numerous condo-
minium
developments,
golf
courses, tennis courts and other
recreational facilities.
Later
builders added several smaller
communities such as Misty Oaks,
Vizcaya,
Fairview
Pointe,
Fairview Townhomes, the Oasis,
Palm Aire Gardens, and Royal
Point. With more development
near Vizcaya.
In partnership with his father
Alfred Orleans, a Philadelphia
land developer, Marvin Orleans
went on to purchase controlling
interest in the Palm Aire Spa and
Country Club in 1965. In 1969
he reincorporated Florida Palm
Aire Corporation (FPA) in
Delaware and took it public. To
expand its holdings, more land
was acquired in 1970 and in
1971, Palm Aire was annexed
with Pompano Beach nearly dou-
bling Pompano's population.
To give form to the dream of
an upscale resort development,
architect Thor Amlie was hired by
FPA to draw up a master plan
and, by the mid-1970s, the cor-
poration was well on its way to
developing The World of Palm
Aire, a 1,500-acre, 3,000-unit lux-
ury residential complex; the
largest sports and leisure-ori-
ented residential community in
the state. The complex featured
five 18-hole golf courses with pro
shops, 37 tennis courts, 20 large
swimming pools, 2 country clubs,
4 restaurants and an internation-
ally renowned spa and hotel.
Amlie would rise to become cor-
porate president.
Over the course of 25 years,
Marvin Orleans went on to build
25,000 housing units in Florida.
FPA's developments include
Boca Aire Country Club, Palm
Aire Country Club in Sarasota,
Boca Golf and Tennis Club, Oak-
land Forest Club in Oakland
Park, The Gardens at Palm Aire,
Del-Aire Golf Club in Delray
Beach, Delray Oaks West and St.
Lucie Falls.
In September of 1986 Marvin
Orleans died in Philadelphia at
