When people are genuinely good and honest, they
are often called the salt of the earth (Note 1). An old
salt is a seasoned sailor. If he starts telling you wild
stories about his adventures at sea, don’t believe

(grain) of salt!
We all have bad moments when everything
seems to go wrong. The last thing you need is to
have someone remind you of all your troubles.
That’s like rubbing salt into a wound. Ouch!
In the old days, prisoners and slaves were forced
to work in the salt mines. This was excruciatingly dif-
ficult and dangerous work. Today we sometimes
refer to an unpleasant job that we detest as the salt
mines. You’ll definitely quit if your boss tells you that
you don’t have enough sense to pound salt.
If you sit below the salt, that means you have a
low-ranking position in the organization. This phrase
