Known as the Dutch Riviera, Scheveningen is part of the coast between Haarlem, to the north, and Rotterdam, to the south. In all seasons, Scheveningen town, and its beach, join to entertain visitors. The Pier, a construct which juts into the North Sea, hosts a cornucopia of seafood eateries, a 150-foot-high Ferris wheel, bungee jumping, and incomparable views. Scheveningen’s sand dunes add drama. But Scheveningen Beach, unlike other seaside meccas, attracts art fans. Here, one finds 23 sculp- ture groups created by Tom Otterness, a native of Wichita, Kansas. Otterness’s work is found in the U.S., in Germany, in South Korea, in Canada, and in Builders of Fine Custom Kitchens, Bathrooms & Full Interiors Palm-Aire Resident Visit our website at: www.PalmAireKB.com 48 Years Experience Lic#16-CRP18810-X other nations’ public spaces. For Scheveningen, Otterness inter- preted, in bronze, characters from internationally-known fairy tales, employing rotund and linear forms. Many characters relate to sea life. “The Herring Eater,” at 36 feet high, is the largest [see photo]. Other Otterness sculptures include “The Crying Giant,” Hans Brinker--with his finger holding back the sea, a diminutive Humpty Dumpty triad, and Hansel and Gretel--fattened and caged, continued on page 13 >
