We celebrated Juneteenth , which is now a national holiday , by watching this film . You may not have heard of this holiday , which is relatively new , but when we look back in time to June 19 , 1865 , we can see why it is so important : on this day , an order was issued by Major General Gordon Granger , a US Army officer and Union general in Galveston , Texas , stating that all slaves had been freed under the Emancipation Proclamation .
