Currents February 2018 3 FOMO C urrents reported last year on the City’s exploration of a partnership with Florida Power & Light (FPL) to install solar power pods and bus benches in the City Hall parking lot. All installation expenses, as well as maintenance costs are to be born by FP&L. Moreover, FP&L will pay the City per kilowatt gener- ated by the facilities. The proposal was pasted at each public reading but was unanimously killed at the January 9 meeting. Not much in the way of discussion on the matter. The only vaguely articulated reason for the failure to support renew- able energy and free income for the City, was the length of the contract - 15 years. Commis- sioner Hardin said: “they are not doing it out of the goodness of their heart. Technology is chang- ing too fast, and this locks us in for 15 years,” he said. Commis- sioner Barry Moss agreed. “Com- missioner Hardin took the words out of my mouth. In 15 years, technology will change in leaps and bounds; we will be stuck with a bad deal.” “[N]ot doing it out of the goodness of their heart.” “technology will change in leaps and bounds; we will be stuck with a bad deal.” Gentlemen, please explain yourselves. What could possibly change to make free energy and free income a “bad deal”? So as some estimates place the annual value of the free energy resell to FP&L at a few thousand dollars, that can be a good safe income stream. The contract term was fifteen years, at say thirty five hundred dollars a year, equals more than fifty thousand dollars. Benefits: $50k, renewable energy, no cost to pro- viding light and bus stop rain cov- erage. Costs: Space in the park- ing lot. Nah, no thanks. The City is suffering from FOMO, (fear of missing out). We could get stuck with out dated solar equipment in a 15 year lease. One might expect that logic to come from the Trump White House, not Broward County Florida. For the times, they are a changing, to quote Dylan. 2018 Florida Legislature The 2018 Florida Legisla- ture’s session is underway with a lame duck governor, who is indu- bitably a U.S. Senate candidate, and his $87.4 billion budget. The 60-day session started early because this year it is an election year for the 120 House seats and half of the state’s 40 senators.
