By percentage, Finland has the fewest resident
foreigners in all of Europe. Finnish is difficult to
learn, having 15 noun cases. Swedish is also officially used. The Sami (Lapps) have their own language and culture.
Finns are reserved, but are eminently hospitable.
Visitors should try the local salmon, lingonberry jam,
reindeer, and cafés: Finns lead the world in coffee
consumption. Pre-travel, listening to “Finlandia,”
Jean Sibelius tone poem, is recommended.
Finland, the only Nordic nation to use the euro,
requires no visa for U.S. citizens. Helsinki, the capital, deserves a few days' visit before the countryside
is explored. Trains are efficient. [See photo of

from Helsinki (visa required).
