Currents December 2018 3 Countertrend C urrents has written about society’s tendency to extremes and we have called out both political parties’ for partici- pating in the extremes. One of the more recent examples was under President Obama when he joined in with extremist pushing anti-gay movements inside pubic education. The result was a clas- sic example of Newton’s third law in human interaction. The oppo- site and equal reaction was the “bathroom law” issue in a few states and “Religious Freedom” legislation. Another view of the trend can be seen in hot spots around the country post mid-term elections. California, Michigan, Kansas, and New England moved dramatically toward the Democrats. Texas is showing a hint of purple, but Florida moved dramatically toward the Republicans. While several red states moved to cod- ify stringent right to life dogma. Kansas, in what will be called a total rebuke of conservative governing principals, turned every open seat to Democrat. Former Senator/Governor Brownback, now in charge of Religious Freedom for the Administration, left Kansas in deep debt with failing institutions, much as Governor Jindal left Louisiana. Hopefully, Red Florida will not follow the same hollow path. Its diverse income streams, as opposed to being depend upon an income tax, should help, but if Tallahassee begins to slash the budget the counties will be in dire straits. Florida, the place for the Red and nearly dead, continues to make a spectacle of itself. It went Red or Purple while the others were moving to Blue. It seems Florida officials prefer to be thought corrupt over incompetent. Florida needs to change the way it votes or change the close race procedure to run-off from re-count and gain more state control over the county election supervisor role. While incompetence seems to be the root of the issues, the GOP gained priceless ground in the fight over voter suppression. If however, Tallahassee looks at the possible Hollywood boycott of its neighbor Georgia, which could cost the State an estimated 9.1 billion dollars, and seizes the economic and socially progres- sive opportunity to capture that market, then Florida could pro- vide revenue to fight sea level rise and capture the affluent, albeit godless, dollars of the lib- eral migrant.
