Chand Baori was built
between 800 and 900 A.D., by
King Raja Chand, as part of the
Abhaneri settlement, a village in
the Dausa district of the arid
Rajasthan state. Temperatures at
the bottom of the steps (baori) are
five to six degrees cooler than
those at upper levels. A three-
story pavilion on one side of the
well, reserved for Royal visits, is
replete with expertly-carved gal-
leries built on pillars, with two pro-
jecting balconies.
