The Story of Opera
The story of opera begins in Italy with the 1607 premiere of Orfeo. This musical drama by Claudio Monteverdi is generally considered the first opera. Today this famous old masterpiece is still performed.
Opera, as we now know it, is a blend of music, song, action and even
dance. The word“ opera” is a shortened form of the Italian phrase opera in musica – literally, a work in music. The text for the story is called the libretto( little book). Although the early operas were composed for the aristocracy, these musical dramas quickly became a popular form of entertainment. In 1637, the first public opera house opened in Venice.
From Italy, opera spread to France, Germany, Spain and England. In 1689(?), the great English composer Henry Purcell presented his Baroque opera Dido and Aeneas in London. Purcell’ s masterpiece is still popular among opera buffs.
