EXPLORERS
by Ann Gebauer-Thompson Harbor Explorers is an open group of AWC members and friends who meet in the spring and summer months to have lunch and then explore some site of interest near the Elbe river . The main idea is to have fun and discover something new or hidden away in the harbor region .
This year our excursions have varied from a pontoon in Teufelsbrück to the Prototyp car museum in Hafencity , a design exhibit in the Elbarkaden , the farm-to-table Höbenköök restaurant in the Oberhafen area , the amazing stage props in a fairy-tale garden in the Materialverwaltung , a walk through a community garden project , and a sunny lunch in the Portuguese quarter .
For the finale of the season we met in October on the Fleetinsel , the unique little island in the heart of the city ( a ‘ fleet ’ is a canal or waterway ). We had lunch in Rialto , a downstairs restaurant with a panoramic view of Herrengrabenfleet . Then we strolled down the Alsterfleet walkway all the way to Baumwall , watching the locks open and the boats passing from the Alster to the Elbe .
All AWCH members are welcome to come to any excursion — we meet rain or shine . See you in the spring !
